The phenomenon of Android usage among youths has now become a global issue begging for assessment and logical inputs. Youths of present-day generation are incomparable with those of the erstwhile generations in terms of utilizing resources, engaging into meaningful life. In fact, their struggles for better life differs in total.
Nigeria as a country consist the population of about 200 million people approximately, where 80% of such population comprises of youths. Therefore, if such population is good, then majority of Nigerians are good, if it’s bad, the nation will be bad, which will be tantamount to underdevelopment.
However, in the phase of development, Nigeria is said to be one of the backward notions in the world. Mostly term as “third world nation.” Whilst this has become so due to the fact that most of its youths spent most of their precious time on android usage as opposed to thinking for self-development. Conversely, in developed countries such as Europe and America youths spend much of their time creating enterprises on social media with their android phones. While in the case of Nigeria youths often use their android phones to create conflict, hate speeches, watch pornography, dwell into political hooliganism.
It’s obvious that with the advent of android phone Nigerian Youths tend to become lazy. They spent most of their time on social media posting things that will not help them in their social being. Statistics has shown that; the number of Nigerian youths that utilizes social media nowadays is increasing in geometric ratio-it increases at random. A situation whereby parents introduces their Daughters and Sons to Android usage has now become incessantly rampant in our society. Parents has now embraced what I termed as “ignorant is bliss.” They have dis-virgin their children mindset with android syndrome.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF ANDROID ON NIGERIAN YOUTHS:
Android has, since its inception negative effects on Nigerian youths. Yes, android have a positive impact on our youths, but its negativity has superseded that of the positive side. This is due to the fact that; android has led to so many marital divorce, hate speeches, incessant conflict, availability of pornography, modern media thuggery engineered by politicians, and other sets of social vices.
The funny and mournful effect of android on our youths is the activity of spreading rumors or information that they didn’t know its origin. To me, this is the saddest part of it. This is partly because, an information may be spread while nobody knows its origin. People keep sharing it arrogantly. For example; in each and every Friday, information is often shared among our youths claiming to propagate the Islamic teaching, by saying that one should recite the particular verses if he/she wants salvation and forgiveness from God. Albeit, despite the theological explanation given by such youths on social media, Islamic scholars has shown that most of the prayers set by those youths are not in accordance with the teaching of the holy prophet. Again, some youths preach devil and mislead people by quoting holy verses and interpret them in accordance to their wish and sentiments. Also in Christianity, youths that are termed as gospel associates-they are youths trained to evangelize the word of Christ across villages, suburbs and countryside. Despite been trained on religious mission; they often use such fora for their personal interest…Oh lord! With the advent of Android even religion has not been glorified by our youths. formal party wear for young juniors
Hopelessly, the itching and irritating part of this android revolution is sharing and imitating of command, information shared by others on social media. For example: On 16 January, 2019, a stupidest challenge was introduced by stupid unknown person on Facebook and WhatsApp. Such challenge was called as 10years challenge, where youths were asked to upload their pics on their display profile (DP). More so, the pic must be the ten-year-old pic together with the contemporary one attach.
The funny part of it is that our youths doesn’t know the origin of such information neither the rationale behind doing so. But those bunch of fools keep posting, comparing their old and current pics without thinking what will be the aftermath of such action.
Youths imitate their attitude from social media particularly Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. For instance, youths imitate dress from celebrities on social media without minding whether it displays their nudity or its against their culture or otherwise. Youths copy some of their ceremonial, marital, and social life from social media-youths tend to acculturate other peoples’ culture and abandon their own as the result of social media. Youths learn how to treat their girlfriends from social media. They also treat their parents and elderly one’s base on what they have learned from the so called White men on social media, not knowing that; what is applicable in Europe may not be same in Nigeria.
POLITICIZING WITH ANDROID:
This is the most painful part of using android that our youths of nowadays engaged in. It is sad, saddening, that our youths use social media to campaign for some looters. Saying false things on their persona. Advertising them on social media as good people- saying that they have did this and that while is otherwise.
A Nigerian youth may be claiming to be humanitarian, calling himself comrade. But when he receives an android phone with monthly data subscription he will keep that comradeship aside and start a different life. It’s now believed in Nigeria that when you see youths making noise on social media, he or she is seeking for political appointment.
Times without number Nigerian youths has been campaigning for Not Too Young to Run bill. But most of them are busy doing so because they are seeking for a political affluence. For example, it happened to one comrade in Kano; campaigning for better leadership in Nigeria, all in the name of comrade. But! after receiving a car from the opposition party he switched to PDP. Again, Nigerian youth with 3 degrees (PhD) bend before the wife of Kano State Governor seeking for political appointment all in the name of loyalty.
I must vindicate that in Gombe State, a youth of about 35 years, with Master’s degree is campaigning on social media just to get a political affluence. What a slap on the face of academicians? This is an activity that is not supposed to be carry out by a secondary school graduate.
However, social media like Facebook has now become a forum where youths spent most of their days posting rubbish on politicians who in turn doesn’t know them.
WAY FORWARD:
The best way to deal with such mess is through keenly and careful utilization of social media. Youths should not be wasting their precious time posting people who doesn’t even recognize them. In Nigerian politics, if you spent much of your time gibbering on someone’s political career, he or she will not respect you. Let the politicians seek for your service-be it diplomat service-so as to be respected highly, and sky will be your starting point.
Also, youths should stop propagating false religious ideologies and teachings. They should learn before preaching in order to avoid misleading others.
Youths should stop accepting, sharing, commenting every information they received from social media. Youths should not be care-free in assessing, scrutinizing and judging things.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, Giddens in his idea on consequences of modernity mentioned media coupled with globalization as an instruments that can easily be use to destroy the modern society.
Above all, Nigerian youths should utilize their android phone the way Mark Zuckerberg utilizes his’ to generate money, instead of posting trash on social media.
There are opportunities such as businesses, online scholarships. Nigerian youths should use such avenues to fulfill their dreams in life.
